Should transgender athletes be allowed to compete in the Olympics as their preferred gender?

Gender is a complex issue, if only because some people believe that it’s not complex at all, while others say that there are a vast number of variables that play into gender identity.

Transgender athletes do exist — and they are forcing many athletic organizations to step back and question the issue of gender.

The Olympics are easily the most famous and recognizable athletic competitions in the world. If transgender athletes are to compete in the Olympics, should they be allowed to compete as the gender in which they identify? Or should they be forced to compete as the gender they were assigned at birth?
